IMPACT SERVICES, Inc.
is a radioactive solid waste processing company that originated at ETTP in 2003 and has since grown to serve federal and commercial clients throughout the United States.  They have processed over 1 million cubic feet of waste in the last two years.

Thanks to both ETTP’s location and rail service access, IMPACT SERVICES has found a unique niche in the waste processing market. Using cost effective rail onsite and easily accessed trucking, the company receives low level waste from commercial nuclear power plants, CERCLA cleanup sites, and other nuclear waste generators.

IMPACT originally operated out of a former DOE surplus building at ETTP.  In 2006 they constructed a new facility at ETTP’s Heritage Center in order to accommodate their growing work volume.  IMPACT is one of the only commercial companies to construct a new facility as part of the ETTP reindustrialization.

At ETTP, IMPACT SERVICES processes the waste, sorts and segregates it, then packages and reships it for final disposal. Depending on the category of waste, they compact, or “volume reduce” some wastes before repackaging.

Other waste requires different treatment. For example, OREX™ single-use protective clothing is widely used in the nuclear industry. IMPACT SERVICES receives bulk shipments of used OREX™ and, as designed by the manufacturer, dissolves the contaminated clothing in hot water. After removing radioactive contamination from the solution, the organic matter is disposed through normal waste channels. IMPACT SERVICES then ships the radioactive waste solids to a regulated disposal site.

Operating with 15 employees in Building 1310-MP, IMPACT SERVICES currently serves federal and commercial clients across the United States. Here are a few representative projects:

  • After DOE completed the largest radioactive waste shipping campaign in DOE history at the Fernald Closure Site, in Fernald, OH, IMPACT SERVICES cleaned the used rail cars to meet industry standards for reuse.

  • After the physical decommissioning of the former Connecticut Yankee Nuclear Power Plant, IMPACT SERVICES cleaned and decontaminated their shipping containers for reuse.

  • All three DOE/Oak Ridge Operations sites have contracted waste processing work with IMPACT SERVICES.
