Materials and Energy Corporation

Background
The DOE Oak Ridge Reindustrialization Program is transforming East Tennessee Technology Park (ETTP) into a business center for private sector industries. Businesses from around the country are reusing the valuable assets and facilities found at ETTP, which are rented through the DOE’s leasing agent, the Community Reuse Organization of East Tennessee (CROET). Flexible lease terms, sometimes using barter arrangements such as those used by (M&EC), add to the attractiveness of ETTP as a business location.

About the Company
M&EC is helping the reindustrialization of ETTP in two ways — by leasing space and by performing cleanup of its soon-to-be new home. The company is developing a commercial waste treatment facility in the Building K-1200 Complex at ETTP’s Heritage Center, where it is leasing approximately 190,000 square feet of building space plus exterior staging areas. It is performing the building cleanup in exchange for reduced lease rates.

M&EC is one of the few companies in the United States licensed to process mixed waste (low-level radioactive and hazardous) for disposal. Its state-licensed Heritage Center facility will house various types of treatment equipment that have been safely used on wastes from many government and commercial sites. The company chose to locate here because of its commitment to Oak Ridge workers, recognizing their technical expertise and proven history in safe waste handling and management.
