DOE-related trailer to assist the Roane Humane Society

from staff reports

A trailer no longer needed at the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge K-25 site will provide a new clinic for the Humane Society of Roane County.

DOE, the Community Reuse Organization of East Tennessee and Bechtel Jacobs Co. worked together to make the donation of the double-wide trailer possible. It will be used by the Humane Society as a low-cost spay and neutering clinic.

"This is another example of how reindustrialization works, even though it's not the standard reindustrialization definition of leasing facilities," said Larry Clark, executive director of the DOE Oak Ridge Operations Assets Utilization Program. "We had an unused piece of equipment that is now being put back into productive use by an organization that can greatly benefit from it."

Representatives of the Department of Energy, the Community Reuse Organization of East Tennessee and Bechtel Jacobs Co. recently transferred ownership of an excess trailer from the Oak Ridge K-25 site to the Humane Society of Roane County. DOE continues to transition underutilized assets to the private sector for reuse to accelerate environmental cleanup while enhancing economic growth in the East Tennessee region.

Bud Matsinger, president of the Humane Society of Roane County, said the donation will "help to significantly lower the number of unwanted animals that end up in shelters without homes and will provide us an opportunity to educate our residents on good care of their pets."

The Humane Society of Roane County is a non-profit organization serving mainly Roane County, but also offering spay/neuter assistance to pet owners in adjacent counties that do not have humane societies of their own, such as Rhea, Morgan and Meigs counties. The Humane Society of Roane County has provided the financial assistance necessary to have almost 1,000 pets spayed or neutered in the last 12 months.

For further information on the Humane Society, contact Matsinger at 376-2474.
